Frequently asked questions
How much gas will I need for a 700 mile trip?
At 25, 30 and 35 MPG, 700 miles takes 28, 23.3 and 20 gallons. Using the U.S. regular gasoline average of $4.27 per gallon (2026-10-26), that is approximately $119.56, $99.63 and $85.40.
How should I account for tolls?
Tolls depend on the road, vehicle and payment method. An electronic pass can cost less than a cash or pay-by-mail rate. Enter a known or separately estimated toll amount; without one, the calculator clearly excludes tolls.
Does the trip cost include parking?
Parking is optional and starts at $0. Add the amount you expect to pay; rates vary widely by city, location and duration.
How much gas does a five-hour drive use?
Time alone is not enough to calculate fuel use: you also need the distance and your vehicle’s MPG. For example, five hours at an average of 60 mph is 300 miles; at 30 MPG, that uses 10 gallons.
Can I add stops along the route?
Yes. Add the distance of each leg together and enter the combined one-way mileage. If any leg includes a toll, add the total known toll amount in the optional adjustments.
How do I split the cost between passengers?
Divide the total shared cost by the number of travelers, including the driver. Use our gas money calculator for the details.
Does it work for EVs?
This calculator estimates gasoline or diesel costs. Electric vehicles use electricity rather than gallons of fuel, so their charging costs are not calculated here.
